LEESBURG. Fla. – The FGCU softball team (7-10) fell in two contests Saturday night, first to Middle Tennessee (4-7) by a score of 4-2 before dropping a 2-1 battle to New Mexico State (6-10) to end the night.

"Two very tough results but those are the type of games we want to be in," said head coach David Deiros. "We need to be better in all facets of our game and finish the tournament on a strong note to prepare us for conference play next weekend."

Game 1 | Middle Tennessee 4, FGCU 2
The Blue Raiders took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first making the most of the three errors committed by the Eagles' defense. In the next top half, both teams would head into a weather delay around 10:22 a.m. as play would not pick back up until just over 5 p.m.

In the top of the third, Johneisha Rowe (Avon Park, Fla./Sebring HS) found herself on first after slapping a fielder's choice to third base, soon stealing second. In her successful attempt, the ball from the catcher sailed, taking a bad hop, allowing Rowe to turn on the jets and score from second.

Down 2-1 heading into the sixth, the Eagles tied the contest. Taylor Bauman (Jacksonville, Fla./Atlantic Coast HS) reached on an error allowing her to go to second as Ashley Hayes (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) came on to run for her. After a sac bunt from Ahnie Jumper (Clewiston, Fla./Plantation American Heritage) moved Hayes to third, Farley Callaghan (Ponte Vedra, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) roped a two-out RBI single to right field.

It was a short-lived tie as Middle Tennessee registered two runs in the top of the seventh before putting the Eagles down in order for the win.

At the plate, Hope Hernandez (Tampa, Fla./Chamberlain HS/Troy) went 2-for-3 with a stolen base. In the circle, starting pitcher Sarah Lawton (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross HS/FSW) tossed 6.0 innings, scattering five hits while striking out four with one walk in the no-decision effort. Bauman was tagged with the loss in her 1.0 inning of relief, giving up three walks.

Game 2 | New Mexico State 2, FGCU 1
FGCU struck first in the bottom of the first, thanks to an RBI single from Nicole Hayslip (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach HS). Rowe singled to the shortstop and swiped second two batters later with two outs as Hayslip drove a 2-2 pitch to left-center.

While holding the 1-0 lead, starting pitcher Marissa Mesiemore (Bushnell, Fla./South Sumter HS) kept the Aggies' bats at bay before she was pulled in the seventh after back-to-back singles. A base hit through the left-side got NMSU on the board.

Now in extras with the International Tiebreaker (ITB) rule in place – the last out in the previous inning is placed on second – both teams saw a scoreless eighth frame. In the ninth, an error allowed New Mexico State to score. FGCU had Rowe on second to start its bottom half but two pop flies and a strikeout ended the Eagles' night of any comeback attempt.

Mesiemore finished her night yielding six hits with one earned run on three walks. Bauman suffers the loss in her 3.0 IP, fanning one batter with one walk.

At the plate, McKenna Batterton (Norco, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt HS) finished 2-for-3.
