FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - Adam’s County will no longer have an animal shelter after this month as the owners of 26 years are retiring.
The shelter was a part of their own property, so now leaders with an animal rescue center called PAWS of Adam’s County are fighting to find a place for stray dogs and cats to live afterwards.
Cathy Hedrick and Patty Daniels are with the non-profit PAWS.
"We want Adam’s County to be a pet friendly place,” Hedrick said. "All of us girls just have passion for animals.”
For years, they’ve work out of the current shelter but that building won’t be available after July 1st.
"At the end of June, they’re done and we won’t have anywhere for the animals to go,” she said.
Hendrick says they’ve applied for the shelter contract hoping to become the next Adam’s County animal shelter, but they first need a physical building to be approved.
She says they are raising money, hoping to buy one soon.
Stan Stoppenhagen is the Adam’s County 1st district commissioner and he’s running the task force to find new shelter owners.
"We are accepting proposals from people who are willing to provide their own building,” he said. “We are also open to building our own building and just contracting out the workers.”
He says PAWS has done great work, but they need a building first to get the contract.
"We’re all going to work on this together and we’re going to find a good solution,” he said.
Leaders with the Allen County Human Shelter and the Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control have stepped up and offered shelter for the animals until Adam’s County gets their new shelter.
