ADAMS COUNTY, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - Just 16 months after it announced it would acquire the facility, a farmers cooperative says it will now close the former Dean Foods plant in Decatur.
Dairy Farmers of America said it will close the plant on Sept. 10, eliminating 160 positions there.
DFA acquired it -- and a second local plant, in Huntington -- in winter 2020, shortly after Dean Foods filed for bankruptcy.
“This was a difficult decision, but we have a responsibility to our dairy farmer-owners to operate financially sound businesses that bring them additional returns on their investments in the Cooperative,” a DFA executive said in a statement.
The Decatur plant makes ice cream products under several brand names.
