CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Former Illinois women's golfer Seul-Ki (Park) Hawley will become the first woman to play in the Mass Open when she does so Monday. The Mass Open runs June 14-16 at Oak Hill Country Club in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
Hawley qualified for the Mass Open by finishing fourth at the PGA Section Championship in 2019.
"I think it's a huge honor to be the first ever (woman) to play in an Open, or any event," said Hawley. "I want to encourage more women and girls to not be afraid of (playing with men) because as you do it again it becomes more comfortable and I want to show them as an example as I play in the Mass Open."
Hawley will also have the unique distinction of being the first female to play in the Mass Open while pregnant. She will be 20 weeks pregnant at the time of the opening round.
"I'm actually playing for two right now. I'm 18 weeks pregnant, so when I play in the Mass Open, not only will I be the first female that is pregnant with a child to play in the Mass Open."
