FARGO, N.D. - The North Dakota State women's soccer team will open up the year with the first of two exhibition games ahead of the fall 2021 season, welcoming in the University of Minnesota on Wednesday to Dacotah Field. The Bison and Gophers will begin the season with kickoff set for 4 p.m.

Fan Day
The first competition for the Bison this season will coincide with the NDSU athletic department's annual fan day, which returns to kick off the fall sports season. Bison Fan Day presented by WDAY will also begin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday on the south side of the Sanford Health Athletic Complex on the NDSU campus.

Fans will be able to see the NDSU football and volleyball teams and watch the NDSU women's soccer exhibition match. There will also be inflatable games from Games Galore, food and beverage available for purchase, and Bison yard signs for the first 1,400 fans in attendance. Admission is free to both events and free parking will be available in the R lot west of the NDSU practice fields.

WDAY, the new television partner of NDSU Athletics, will broadcast live during the 4, 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts, including an announcement of the new broadcast team for Bison football at 5 p.m.

There will be two entrances to Dacotah Field on Fan Day, with the traditional gate entrance at the north east corner of the field open, as well as the north gate between Dacotah Field and the Sanford Health Athletic Complex being open to allow fans to easily access both Fan Day and the Bison soccer match.

2021 Season Attendance Policy
With the return to a traditional fall season for the Bison women's soccer team, and matches being played with the standard Dacotah Field layout, attendance to Bison home soccer matches is once again open to the general public. Fans are strongly encouraged to wear masks to Bison soccer games and maintain social distancing where possible with the COVID-19 Pandemic still impacting our community.

A Return to Normalcy
The 2021 season marks the return of the traditional fall schedule format for Bison Soccer. The COVID-19 Pandemic postponed the 2020 season to the spring of 2021, and with it, canceled the non-conference schedule, leaving only Summit League play.

The Series with Minnesota

  • While Wednesday's match up against the University of Minnesota is an exhibition contest, North Dakota State has played the Gophers eight times officially on the soccer pitch, with Minnesota claiming all eight contests.
  • The two teams have met just once in the Mike Regan era, with that lone meeting coming in St. Paul, Minnesota on September 7, 2018, a 4-0 victory for the hosts.
  • Wednesday's match up will be just the second time the Bison have hosted Minnesota in women's soccer in Fargo and it will be the first meeting between the two sides at Dacotah Field.
  • The only other meeting in Fargo came on August 31, 2008, with the Bison falling 3-0 to Minnesota at the Ellig Sports Complex.

About Minnesota

  • The Gophers enter a new era in 2021, as Minnesota hired former Gopher great Erin Chastain as its next head coach on June 11. Chastain was a four-year starter and three-year captain for the Gophers in the 1990s, and becomes the fifth head coach in program history.
  • Minnesota went on to finish the spring season at 5-4-3, including a 5-3-3 mark in Big 10 play to close the regular season in a tie for seventh in the standings.
  • Minnesota advanced to the second round of the Big Ten Regional Weekend after Nebraska had to withdraw follow health concerns. Minnesota then fell to Iowa 2-0 to end its season on April 11.

The Rookies

  • The 2021 summer saw the arrival of six true freshman who join Mike Regan's fourth edition of the Bison women's soccer program.
  • Josie Fieldman, a midfielder from Minnetonka, Minn.; Bella Grandbois, a forward/midfielder from New Hope, Minn.; Katie Pagel, a defender from Aurora, Colo.; Gabby Sangillo, a midfielder from Goodyear, Ariz.; Loretta Wacek, a forward from St. Paul, Minn.; and Olivia Watson, a forward from Moorhead, Minn. all have settled in to Fargo and the women's soccer program.
  • All six freshman signed for the Bison on signing day in November of 2020.

The Transfer

  • With a bulk of the spring 2020 squad returning and six true freshman joining the Bison, Regan and staff welcomed in just one transfer this summer, Payton Jo Armijo.
  • Armijo joins the Bison from Cal State Northridge, where the Bakersfield, California native appeared in 34 matches over two seasons as a midfielder.
  • Armijo has a goal and three career assists, logging over 1500 minutes during her time with the Matadors.

Last Time Out

  • The Bison capped the delayed 2020-21 season with a 3-1 victory over Oral Roberts on Sunday (April 4) afternoon inside the Dacotah Field Bubble.
  • The Bison ended the season with a final record of 7-8-1, playing exclusively Summit League matches.
  • NDSU went ahead 2-0 in the first half, with a pair of Bison freshmen notching the first goals of their careers. Kelsey Kallio scored in the 17th minute, while Aliya Owens netted one in the 32nd minute.
  • Olivia Lovick assisted on the first Bison goal, and Taylore Simmons and Kallio assisted on the second.
  • ORU cut the margin to 2-1 in the 70th minute on a rebound goal from Mia Kitterman. However, Lovick sealed the victory for NDSU with a goal in the final minute, outracing the Golden Eagles nearly the length of the field after ORU brought its goalkeeper up in a last-ditch effort.
  • NDSU outshot ORU in the match, 17-14. Lovick put three shots on goal to lead the Bison.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Sofia Howe made six saves for NDSU, earning the win.

Last Time Against Minnesota

  • Minnesota used three goals in a three-minute stretch in the second half to pull away for a 4-0 win over North Dakota State on Friday evening at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
  • Minnesota took a 1-0 lead into halftime after sophomore Makenzie Langdok scored on a long-distance strike in the 18th minute.
  • Senior forward April Bockin scored twice in the 54th minute for the Gophers, then junior defender Nikki Albrecht tacked on another Minnesota goal in the 56th minute off a corner kick.
  • NDSU was out-shot 18-7 in the contest.
  • NDSU senior midfielder Roxy Roemer led the Bison with three shots and two shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Monica Polgar registered four saves in 90 minutes.

The Future is Now

  • As North Dakota State begins the 2021 season, the Bison bring back a wealth of experience, with 174 of the 176 starts in the spring returning.
  • The Bison return 17 of the 20 goals from last season, including four freshman goal scorers (Olivia Lovick, Jess Hanley, Kelsey Kallio and Aliya Owens) that combined for half of the goals, finding the back of the net 10 times in 16 games.
  • The group of four freshman goal scorers, along with fellow freshman Katrina Patscot and Abby Wilkinson, combined for 15 of NDSU's 24 assists on the season.
  • In total, the Bison return 17 of 20 goals and 23 of 24 assists. The senior core of Ellie Schneider, Brookelyn Dew and Danielle Algera all had two goals each last season and tallied six total assists.

Schneider Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team

  • Defender Ellie Schneider was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Soccer First Team in June, following her performance in the classroom and on the pitch this spring.
  • Schneider is the first Bison since 2011 to be selected to the team. Schneider was also named to the Summit League Academic All-League Team in May.
  • Starting all 16 matches for the Bison during the delayed spring season, Schneider was third on the team with seven points. She recorded two goals and three assists. Schneider scored the game-winning goals against Western Illinois on Feb. 19 and Omaha on Feb. 28.
  • Schneider has a 3.96 GPA in Biological Science.

Lovick, Hanley Named to Summit League All-Newcomer Team
  • Olivia Lovick and Jess Hanley were named to the Summit League All-Newcomer team this spring.

  • Hanley finished the year with two goals and five assists, tying the team lead in assists. She ranked second on the team with nine points. Hanley ranked fifth in the league in assists.
  • It is the eighth time NDSU has had multiple selections to the Summit League All-Newcomer or All-Freshman team.
  • Heading into the fall 2021 season, NDSU has five former all-newcomer or all-freshman team selections on the roster, including Lovick, Hanley, Danielle Algera (2017), Lavin Douglass (2019) and McKenna Strand (2019).
  • Mike Regan is in his fourth season at the head coach of the Bison. Regan was named head women's soccer coach at North Dakota State on Jan. 19, 2018.

  • Regan came to NDSU after two seasons as a Big Ten assistant coach at Indiana University in Bloomington.
  • Prior to Indiana, he was an assistant coach at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, for four seasons where he was part of the 2015 Missouri Valley Conference championship team and the 2015 MVC Coaching Staff of the Year.
  • Before joining Drake, Regan was the head coach for the North Iowa Area Community College men's soccer team for five seasons, where he posted an impressive record of 74-17-6 and was named the NJCAA/ICCAC Men's Soccer Coach of the Year three times.
