2020 San José State record: 7-1, 6-0 Mountain West. The Spartans won the Mountain West football championship defeating Boise State, 34-20, at Sam Boyd Stadium, in Las Vegas, Nev., and lost to Ball State, 34-13, in the Offerpad Arizona Bowl in Tucson, Ariz.

The Spartans finished #24 in the final Associated Press and Amway/USA Today coaches polls and #22 in the College Football Playoff rankings.

2021 spring Southern Utah record: 1-5, 1-5 Big Sky Conference. The Thunderbirds finished seventh in the Big Sky Conference standings and seek to end a three-game losing streak from the end of the 2021 spring season.

Series history: San Jose State leads the series, 2-0. In both instances, Southern Utah was the Spartans' third game of the season and a home opener.

San Jose State won the most recent meeting, 16-11, on September 18, 2010, for its only win of the season under then-first-year head coach Mike MacIntyre.  The Spartans opened 2010 at #1-Alabama and at #11-Wisconsin. Current Spartan football head coach Brent Brennan was the wide receivers coach for San Jose State that season. Demario Warren of Southern Utah was in his third season as the Thunderbirds defensive backs coach.

The Spartans won the first meeting between these teams, 47-7, on September 16, 2000 after playing #1-Nebraska and Stanford in back-to-back road games.

Play-by-Play Radio Coverage: KTRB (860 AM, Fremont) will broadcast the Southern Utah game. Justin Allegri calls the play-by-play. Kevin Richardson provides commentary. The Southern Utah broadcast begins at 6:30 p.m. (PT) with a pregame show. The broadcast also is available on the TuneIn app.

KSJS (90.5 FM, San José) also will broadcast the Southern Utah game. Air time is 6:45 p.m. (PT) with a pregame show.

Television:  The CBS Sports Network will televise  the Southern Utah game.  Jason Knapp calls the play-by-play. Aaron Murray is the analyst. Amanda Guerra is the sideline reporter. The CBS Sports Network telecast begins at 7:00 p.m. (PT).

Brent Brennan is a guest on KRTY Radio (95.3 FM, San Jose) each Tuesday prior to a home game. The next show is Tuesday, August 24, at 6:30 a.m. (PT). Show co-hosts are Gary Scott Thomas and Julie Stevens.

Quest for consecutive winning seasons: After last year's 7-1 win-loss record, San Jose State seeks back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1989, 1990, 1991, and 1992.

Best 20-game stretch since 2012 & 2013:  In San Jose State's last 20 games covering the 2019 and 2020 seasons, the Spartans have a 12-8 win-loss record. San Jose State was 5-7 in 2019 and 7-1 in 2020.

The last time the Spartans had a better span of 20 games was in 2012 and the first seven games of 2013 when San Jose State was 15-5. The Spartans were 11-2 in 2012 and 4-3 in 2013 after a 51-44 comeback home win over Wyoming.
