MARSHALL — After a year of construction, Marshall Public Schools staff are looking forward to seeing students at the new Southview Elementary this fall. The public is also invited to get a first look at the new school on Aug. 20. An open house will be held from noon to 3 p.m., with a ribbon cutting ceremony, tours and more.
“We’ve got three hours set aside. We have a brief ceremony at the beginning, and a ribbon cutting,” Marshall Superintendent Jeremy Williams said this week. “We’re really looking forward to that.”
Last year, COVID-19 restrictions made it harder to have traditional celebrations like a groundbreaking for the new school. However, celebrations for the opening of the school are able to be more open, and this year MPS staff said they planned the open house to coincide with Marshall’s Sounds of Summer festival so more people might have the chance to see the finished building.
The celebrations on Aug. 20 will have more than just a ribbon cutting and open house, Williams and MPS business services director Dion Caron said. There will be food vendors at the school site, as well as kids’ games.
“The (Lyon County) Historical Society has a display that they’re going to bring in. We have a couple of our retired teachers who have helped put that together, so they’ll have some things talking about schools and the history of Marshall as well,” Williams said.
In case of rain, activities will likely move inside the school, he said.
“We encourage our community to come by and visit our school at that event,” Williams said.
