Central Pa. school districts close, go remote to avoid Ida complications - PennLive

Several central Pa. school districts are making plans to ensure the safety of children and staff as inches of rain threatens to cause widespread flooding around the region.

The remnants of Hurricane Ida are expected to drop up to 7 inches through the afternoon and into Wednesday evening, according to the National Weather Service. Significant flooding is expected around several central Pa. streams and creeks.

Because of this, many districts are opting to use methods that have so far kept kids at school while staying home: remote learning. But some are giving students and staff a full day off.

Here is a list of school district actions for Sept. 1, 2021. If a district is not listed, it has not shared plans for any changes to the school day:

Dauphin County:

  • Harrisburg School District: The district said that due to inclement weather, all district students and teachers should work remotely. All other staff will need to talk to a supervisor. All district activities and transportation services are cancelled for the day. Additional details will be on the district website and Facebook page.
  • Central Dauphin School District: All students, teachers and paraprofessionals should work remotely. All other staff should report as scheduled. All district activities are cancelled and there will be no district transportation services.
  • Derry Township School District: As of 8:30 p.m. the district warned of potential schedule changes, but none were official. If school is cancelled, the district said they will not have a remote day “in consideration of the possibility of severe flooding and electrical outages.”
  • Middletown Area School District: No decisions had been made about closures as of 8:30 p.m. The district website states: “If this weather event results in flooding, road closures, and/or power outages, MASD may be forced to close school. If that happens, students will NOT be required to transition to remote learning due to potential power outages and hardships that many families may have to endure. It will simply be a day off of school and may have to be made up at a later date.”
  • Millersburg Area School District: The district will go fully remote, and all evening activities are cancelled.
  • Susquehanna Township School District: All district buildings will be closed to in-person learning and activities. It will not be a virtual learning day. All activities and athletic events are cancelled, and there will be no transportation services. The district will evaluate conditions before announcing re-opening on Sept. 2.
  • Steelton-Highspire School District: Classes will be held remotely. Anyone who needs assistance should contact their teachers.

Cumberland County:

  • Cumberland Valley School District: All CV schools, district buildings and offices will be closed. Only designated personnel should report as directed. It is not a remote learning day. The district said that because it is only the second day of school, teachers have not been able to put remote learning plans in place. “In addition, many students reported technology-related issues today at school, which we feel we need to rectify before we are able to move to fully remote learning this year.”
  • East Pennsboro Area School District: As of 3 p.m., the district said there would be early dismissal for all buildings. The high school would dismiss at 12:20 p.m., middle school at 12:50 p.m. and elementary school at 1:20 p.m.
  • West Shore School District: All students will move to remote learning on a modified schedule. The district acknowledged the possibility of power outages that could impact staff’s ability to teach and student’s ability to learn remotely. If that occurs, the district will “adjust our expectations for the day accordingly.”
  • Big Spring School District: School will be closed, and it is not a remote learning day.
  • South Middleton School District: The district will be closed. Additioanl weather-related information will be provided “as needed.”
  • Capitol Area Intermediate Unit: Students in Early Intervention Preschool, Hill Top Academy and Diakon Youth Center will have a virtual learning day. All other CAIU students and staff should follow their location’s/program’s school district’s schedules. CAIU’s Enola facility will be closed and staff will be working remotely.
  • Cumberland Perry Area Career and Technical Center: The school advises following local school’s mandates for cancellations and delays, but the center will be closed.
  • Mechanicsburg Area School District: All schools and offices will be closed, and there will be no school activities or remote work assigned. The district will determine whether a staggard start or any other delays are required for Thursday.
  • Carlisle Area School District: Schools are closed.
  • Shippensburg Area School District: There will be a 2-hour early dismissal on Wednesday, and a 3-hour delayed start on Thursday.
