COLUMBIA, Mo. – After a near-program-record-low round in the second of three rounds of the Johnie Imes Invitational, the Illinois State women's golf team closed strong, and took fifth place of 14 schools, which is the best finish by a Redbird team at the event since the 2009-10 season.

The team's final-round 301 gave the team a three-round score of 891, the sixth time in team history that ISU has eclipsed the 900-stroke mark in a three-round tournament, and the third-lowest three-round score in school history, behind only the 876 from the Mid-American Challenge in 2020-21 and the 886 at the Shootout at the Legends event in 2005-06.

Host Missouri held on late for the team title with an 865, while Oral Roberts (867) and Mercer (869) made a charge late to threaten the Tigers. Arkansas State took fourth with an 889, while the Redbirds and Wichita State tied for the fifth spot with the 891. Northern Illinois (892), Eastern Kentucky (893), Missouri State (897), Missouri "B" squad (902), Bradley (904), Little Rock (906), South Dakota (916), and UAB (923) rounded out the 14 teams in the field.

In the 10 previous trips to the Johnie Imes Invitational, only 2009-10 – ISU's first time at the event – saw a better Redbird finish where ISU finished in sole possession of fifth place in the tournament.

Avalon Woodward carded a team-low 73 on the final day of the event, as she and Ali Schrock – who shot a 74 – tied for the best finish on the team, each finishing in a tie for 11th place in the deep field. The remaining three golfers – Kehler Koss, Vinisha Gunaseelan, and Maria Toledo Bailey – each carded identical 77's in the final round, while Koss ended the three rounds tied for 18th, Gunaseelan tied for 53rd, and Toledo Bailey 75th. Playing as an individual, Kira Wolf shot a 75 for the Redbirds, and closed the tournament tied for 42nd.

Utilizing a shotgun start for the first time in the tournament, the Redbirds all opened their rounds on different holes, with Woodward opening on the sixth hole, which she recorded a par. She followed that with five consecutive pars, before her only birdie came on the par-four 13th hole. After three more pars she added her second and final bogey to the round, as she closed her weekend with six consecutive pars to finish at one stroke over par on the day.

Schrock, opening on the par-four fifth hole, started with four pars, before she birdied the par-five ninth hole to push to a stroke under par. She came back with five more pars and her second and final birdie of the round to drop her score to two shots under par. Her finish to the round wasn't as strong as her start, as she closed with four bogeys over her final four holes; however, her great start helped her to a two-over 74 for the round, and a three-over-par score for the tournament.

Koss, who started her round on the par-four fourth hole, kicked off play with five consecutive pars, as her par streak ended with a bogey on the ninth hole. She fought back on the 10th with her lone birdie of the day; however, four over-par scores over her final nine holes pushed her to a final-round 77.

Wolf's round opened on the par-four 18th hole, and she was a stroke over par through her first five holes before she dropped back-to-back birdies on the par-four fifth hole and the par-five sixth hole, to end the stretch at one shot under par. A bogey one hole later put her at even par halfway through her round. She had six pars and three bogeys on her back nine of the day, and her 75 was the team's third-best score on the afternoon.

Sophomore transfer Gunaseelan had a pair of birdies on her day for IS, while adding nine pars and seven bogeys, ending her tournament with a five-over 77 on the day.

After missing the first two rounds, Maria Toledo Bailey came back strong and led the team with three birdies on the round, as she also had eight pars against seven over-par holes, closing her day with a five-over 77.

The Redbirds turn around next weekend for a short trip in competing at the Coyote Creek Classic, hosted by Bradley University at Coyote Creek Golf Course in Peoria. The tournament spans two days on October 9 and 10.
