OXFORD, Miss. – The Kansas State women's tennis program closed out the Ole Miss Fall Invite on Sunday (September 26) with two doubles victories and two singles wins at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
"We had six sessions of competition throughout the weekend," said head coach Jordan Smith. "The team competed extremely well in five out of six of them. Never easy playing against a title contender like Georgia. I was very pleased by how well we competed and know we came out of this weekend to be proud of. Especially after winning a majority of our matches against a school like Alabama."
Freshman Florentine Dekkers and senior Manami Ukita gave K-State its first victory of the final day with a 6-2 doubles' win over Alabama's Sydeny Orefice and Ansley Cheshire.
Seniors Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares followed with a 6-2 victory in its doubles match with Alabama's Petra Sedlackova and Anna Parkhomenko.
Closing out the doubles play was senior Anna Turco and freshman Dinara Alloyarova, who were up early in the match but couldn't hold and fell 6-4 to Alabama's Anne Marie Hiser and Loudmilla Bencheikh.
In singles' play, Ukita earned her first singles win of the tournament with a two-set victory over Georgia's Alee Clayton, 6-2, 6-0.
Senior Rosanna Maffei battled to a three-set win over Georgia's Mai Nirundorn, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Maffei had the advantage early with a 6-3 win in set one before Nirundorn tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-3 win in set two. The third and final set was close from the start, but at the end, Maffei clinched the victory, 6-4.
Job couldn't maintain her momentum from doubles play and fell to Georgia's Lea Ma, 6-3, 6-0.
In her singles match of the day, Dekkers was unable to take the lead and was defeated by Georgia's Mell Reasco, 6-1, 6-1. Turco and Alloyarova both succumbed to their singles opponents in straight sets, each falling to Georgia's Ania Hertel and Guillermina Grant, 6-2, 6-2.
At the end of the Ole Miss Invite, the Wildcats walked away with eight singles wins and four doubles victories against three teams (Alabama, Georgia and Ole Miss) that made the NCAA Championships this past spring.
Up next for K-State is the ITA All-Americans Championship from Monday, October 4 to Sunday, October 10. The championship will kick off with qualifying rounds from October 4-5 before the main draw from October 6-10.
