It’s time for Big 12 conference play to start.
Your Kansas State Wildcats and the Oklahoma State Cowboys have identical 3-0 records, but the two squads have reached that mark in different ways.
The Wildcats started with a dominating win over Stanford in Arlington, TX, where seemingly everything K-State worked well. Then a tough win over a good Southern Illinois team to open “true” home slate that saw the loss of starting QB Skylar Thompson. And last week, another tough win over a good Nevada team that already had a Power 5 pelt under their belt this season. The Wildcats have a powerful run game and a stifling defense, and have limited mistakes in their two FBS wins, and did enough to overcome mistakes against a top FCS team.
The Cowboys are 3-0 after squeaking out wins over Missouri State (not a top FCS team), Tulsa, and Boise State. Tulsa shocked Ohio State early before the Buckeyes ran away with a victory, and Boise State will challenge Nevada for the MWC crown. But the Pokes schedule has definitely not been as arduous as K-State’s, yet the Cowboys have still struggled.
The once-vaunted Pokes passing game has been grounded, and Ok State is being mostly led by their running game. They also have played well enough on defense, and aren’t all that far behind K-State in terms of effectively stopping the opponent’s run game. But they are still dangerous. Spencer Sanders could come alive at any moment for a big play. There’s a strong stable of running backs, and athletes around the roster.
All of that to say that the current line on the game — that pegs the Pokes as favorites — is a bit interesting, since the Wildcats have looked better so far through the first quarter of the season. But a raucous home crowd in Stillwater, something a good chunk of the K-State team hasn’t experienced before, is likely enough to cause some issues at least early on for the Wildcats. So don’t expect a fast start from K-State.
This is a game that the Wildcats should win, but the Cowboys won’t go down without a fight. But at least if it’s a run-heavy game, it should go by fairly quickly.
