Virtual workouts will be a feature of The Mine opening at the Shops at Kenilworth.

When Ann Marie Barbour walks through the old space formerly occupied by home goods retailer Stebbins Anderson in the Shops at Kenilworth in Towson, she sees beauty amid the exposed steel beams, dangling wires, ladders and dusty concrete floors.

It means progress is being made on the 22,000-square-foot fitness center she will oversee.

The Mine is a boutique fitness concept that will offer its clientele – those who may pay as much as $349 a month – five studios, an open gym, technology-driven strength and cardio equipment, infrared saunas, co-work space along with personal training and physical therapy under one roof.

Barbour, director of programs and operations for The Mine, excitedly points to the features members will enjoy like yoga, barre, cycle, bootcamp and Xformer studios and a kids club, once it opens its doors in January.

“The reception desk will be right here when you walk in the door, and yoga over there and Pilates over there and physical therapy back there,” Barbour said in rapid fire, pointing to the areas that will occupy the space. “There will be an immersive digital wall that will go to the beat of the music that will show everybody’s zones and how hard they are working. All of our studio instructors have been working over a year on an immersive program that we are thrilled for everyone to experience.”

The Mine is the brainchild of entrepreneur Alex Jacobs, founder and president of Coppermine, which began primarily operating youth indoor and outdoor sports programs in the Baltimore area and expanding to racquet and fitness clubs in Bare Hills, Pikesville, Hampstead and Annapolis.

Jacobs teamed up with Kenilworth owner Greenberg Gibbons for Coppermine’s first boutique studio-based venture, which the company may expand based on the success of its initial effort, Barbour said. The Mine also plans to offer community outreach including workshops in health and nutrition. Leading up to its opening, Barbour said The Mine will offer a series of special events and pop-up classes to give members and potential members a taste of what’s to come.

“Our team brainstormed ideas and concepts with Greenberg Gibbons to create an immersive and experiential fitness journey for our members that would complement the other tenants at The Shops at Kenilworth,” Jacobs said in a statement. “We’re excited to offer something special for the greater Baltimore community not only with our fitness offering, but through events and educational workshops centered around health and wellness.”

Declining sales and foot traffic, along with steady growth of e-commerce, led to Stebbins’ closing in December 2019. A mainstay in the community and an anchor for decades, the store had already downsized to a single floor in 2015. Trader Joe’s now operates in Stebbins’ former upper level.

The Mine will join a diverse mix of tenants including its immediate neighbors, Amaryllis and Liza Byrd Boutique, along with About Faces Day Spa & Salon, South Moon Under, Ruth Shaw, Radcliffe Jewelers, Quiet Storm Surf Shop, Atwaters and Italian Gardens.

Kaley Wilson, who works at Mint+Major, a boutique that sells a mixture of women’s clothing, jewelry, beauty products and home décor to a 20 to 40-year-old demographic, said she is looking forward to The Mine, since the gym’s members would likely be attracted to Mint+Major. “I am excited about the gym. Once they are here, their members will want to know what else is here.”

Greenberg Gibbons, which completed a $20 million renovation of The Shops at Kenilworth in 2015, is also hoping The Mines’ success will stimulate the mall’s growth. This summer, the developer announced that Meg Fox Aesthetics and Roosters Men’s Grooming Center would be joining The Shops at Kenilworth this fall.
