UPDATE: NJ Transit suspends service, highways closed amid Ida storm remnants

Tropical Storm Ida made for a tough commute home Wednesday, shutting down service on PATH lines, NJ Transit light rail and two rail lines and flooding highways and local streets.

By 10 p.m., NJ Transit announced all rail, bus and light rail service was subject to suspension, detours or delays due to the storm and flooding. Service was restored on the busy Northeast Corridor line after it had been suspended between Penn Station New York and Newark Airport due to flooding. The Princeton Shuttle also was suspended.

Limited PATH service was later restored between Grove Street and 33rd Street, which is underground. Limited service resumed between Newark and Journal Square, but service to World Trade center remained suspended. PATH had suspended service earlier on the Newark-World Trade Center and the Journal Square to 33rd Street New York lines. line due to weather issues.

Light rail service also is suspended on the RiverlIne between the Waterfront entertainment complex and the Walter Rand Transportation center due to flooding problems in Camden and on the Newark Light rail mainline and Grove Street extension is suspended between Grove Street and Newark Broad Street , the agency said.

NJ Transit had to change the busy route 1 bus in Newark, having buses start and end their runs at Penn Station because of flooding on Ferry Street

Bus routes 412 and 452 are on detour on River Road between 27th St and 36th St in Camden due to flooding. Bus route 48 also was detoured in Woodbridge and Perth Amboy because Amboy Avenue is closed between Lawrence Street and Route 35 due to flooding.

Lakeland Bus officials announced that service would be suspended on Thursday due to flooding.

NJDOT reported downed trees on I-295 north closing the right lane near Bellmawr, on Route 322 in Harrison Township, closing all lanes and on Route 31 North in Oxford. Flloding also closed all lanes on I-295 from Exit 73 to Exit 72 in Hopewell.

Sections of the New Jersey Turnpike are flooded including the inner and outer northbound lanes neat Exit 12 in Carteret, and the Hudson County extension in both directions near exit 14C in Jersey City, which also closed the Christopher Columbus Drive exit in Jersey City.

Route 46 is flooded in both directions in Liberty near Hope Road as is I-80 west in Blairstown near exit 12. Route 28 in Somerville near Gaston Road is flooded in both directions.

Highway and local streets also were inundated with flood waters that overwhelmed storm drains. Debris and a downed tree closed one right lane on the New Jersey Turnpike north near Interchange 3 - Route 168 in Deptford.

Flooding was reported by NJDOT on I-76 east near exit 1A for Route 42 and I-295 in Bellmawr that closed the left lane, on Route 173 in both directions in Bethlehem and on Route 29 in West Amwell, closing all lanes.

Flooding also closed all lanes of Route 22 in Union near the GardenState Parkway and the right lane on Route 17 south near Route 120/Paterson Plank Road in Carlstadt.

As rains intensified and flash flood warnings were issued, multiple police departments and safety organizations warned drivers to stay off closed roads and not to drive through flooded streets as the storm and flooding intensified.
