If it wasn’t already before, this game just got a lot more interesting.
Before the season started, many pegged this game — not the game against Stanford — as the true early-season measuring stick for the Kansas State Wildcats. Nevada is good, and is led by potential first-round (and maybe first-overall) NFL Draft pick Carson Strong. They are coached by Jay Norvell, a former journeyman assistant who has finally been able to make his head-coaching mark in Reno, NV — and at this rate, may not be there much longer as programs with more money start knocking on his door. Norvell’s name was even put out there seriously for the K-State job in 2018, and many were intrigued by the then-60-year-old (that looks 40) and his strong run as an assistant coach, QBs and assistant OC, for much of the latter years of Bob Stoops tenure at Oklahoma (among others).
So this isn’t a Nevada team to look past. There is legit talent on this team, especially on offense, and the Wolf Pack are capable of puting up enough points to hang with anybody. Their defense is also solid, though maybe not spectacular, and is more solid against the pass than the run — which against most teams is a good thing, but may actually be in K-State’s favor today.
The Wildcats without Skylar Thompson under center are going to need to rely pretty heavily on the run game, and Deuce Vaughn in particular, to keep the ball moving and keep Nevada’s offense off the field. Yes, Will Howard will need to throw some to keep the defense honest, but this going to be a game, much like TCU last year, where the Wildcats shouldn’t need to rely on the freshman’s(*) arm to move the ball down the field. Keep it simple, run the ball a lot, and don’t get behind the sticks early. Easier said than done.
K-State should be able to win this game today. But it’s not going to be easy, and it likely won’t look pretty when it happens. But K-State could easily lose this game, especially with another four-turnover performance from the offense.
We’ve got the early afternoon game today, with an 1pm CT kickoff from Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium being streamed for a national audience on ESPN+ with Shawn Kenney (play-by-play), former K-State lineman Barrett Brooks (analyst), and Shane Sparks (sidelines) on the call.
