CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team is set to open its fall season at the Contender CrossFit Islander Open starting on Friday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The tournament will feature six singles draws and three doubles draws.
Play starts at 9 a.m. each day with play running through Sunday.
The Competition
Along with UTRGV, other teams competing at the Islander Open include: host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Lamar, UT Arlington, UT Tyler, and Incarnate Word.
Last Year at Islander Open
UTRGV last competed at the Islander Open back in the fall of 2019.
Samuel de Felipe Garcia came away with the Singles A Draw Championship as he defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Pascal Lorieul 6-1, 7-6.
As a team, the Vaquros picked up four wins to close out the Islander Open as Georgije Babic beat Carlos Berna Ruiz in three sets.
Zane Kohrs beat Lamar's Joshua Sundaram for fifth place in the "C" Draw in three sets as well.
Alberto Mello finished in second place in the "E" Draw falling to Incarnate Word's Nedim Ahmic in the championship.
Mello and Kohrs also teamed up for a doubles victory over Laredo Community College's Nicolas Dominguez and Jorge Abreu 6-1.
Fall Focus
The Vaqueros want to use the fall to get ready for the spring dual match season so they want to make sure they do things the right way in the fall.
At the end of the day, it's all about putting in the hard work on a consistent basis. If the Vaqueros can do that then they believe everything else will take care of itself.
"The biggest focus right now is doing everything right every day and focusing on what makes us better and makes us more competitive," Robinson said. "We are not necessarily worried about wins or losses right now but worried about where our focus is, where our effort is, and that we are moving as a team to our main goal in the future. The biggest thing for us is showing up every day and putting our foot to the floor and working as hard as we can."

Next Up
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sept. 24 when they compete at the UTSA Invitational in San Antonio.
