ELLENSBURG, Wash. – It was a strong start throughout most of the first half for the Western Oregon University football team on Saturday night at Central Washington. Holding a 7-0 lead and still in front late in the second quarter, the Wildcats ended up scoring 39 unanswered points on their way to claiming the 53-21 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory at Tomlinson Stadium.
The script was very similar to a few weeks ago in Monmouth. WOU (2-5, 1-2 GNAC) scored the first touchdown and then Central Washington (5-2, 3-0 GNAC) went on to score 42 unanswered points on their way to the 45-14 win in Monmouth on Oct. 9. Fast forward to Oct. 23 and this time a 39-point unanswered run helped the Wildcats pull away for the win. The victory also gives Central Washington the GNAC title with both WOU and CWU having just one conference game left and neither the Wolves or Simon Fraser can catch the Wildcats in the standings.
WOU took the first possession and went right down the field. After CWU won the toss and deferred to the second half, the Wolves began at the 35 following a kickoff out-of-bounds. The big play came on second-and-seven out near midfield when Ryan Worthley found Thomas Wright for a 38-yard strike down to the CWU 11. Two plays later, Worthley found Jarren Ford for the 15-yard TD and a 7-0 lead just over three minutes into the game.
The defense forced a quick three-and-out and the offense went right back to work. Andrew Valladares broke free for a 20-yard gain out to midfield. Omari Land added an 11-yard run and later another 11-yard carry had the ball near the red zone at the CWU 23. On the next play, the CWU defense came up big coming up with an interception in the end zone to stop the drive.
CWU took the turnover and turned that into three points to leave WOU with a 7-3 lead entering the second quarter. Midway through the second quarter, WOU was again on the move. Following a couple of short passes to London Smalley, Damon Hickok and Land, WOU was at the CWU 37. Faced with a fourth-and-three at the CWU 27, the Wolves went for it and the Wildcat defense came up large again with another interception at the CWU 21 to end the threat.
The Wildcats capped the half taking that turnover and going 79 yards for a touchdown and following the two-point conversion, took a 11-7 lead into halftime.
Central Washington then exploded out of the locker rooms scoring touchdowns on three straight drives to move out to a 32-7 lead early in the fourth quarter.
After the Wildcats scored again midway through the fourth quarter to go ahead 39-7, WOU snapped the 39 unanswered points with a solid 60-yard drive. On fourth-and-two out near midfield, Worthley found Ford for a 22-yard catch to the CWU 30 and a first down. Dominique Loggins rushed for 10 yards to setup a 20-yard TD pass from Worthley to Smalley to cut the deficit to 39-14.
CWU answered with a touchdown and then WOU found the end zone one more time on a long run. With the ball at the WOU 33, Land broke free as he was able to shake off multiple would-be tacklers to go 67 yards for the touchdown.
The Wildcats closed the scoring coming back with a touchdown before the final minute to provide the final margin of 53-21.
WOU tallied 368 yards of total offense, rushing for 231. Central Washington tallied 476 total yards, throwing for 288.
Worthley completed 13-25 for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Ford caught four passes for 49 yards and a touchdown. Wright added two catches for 42 yards, Smalley with two catches for 24 yards and a touchdown, while Land also had two catches for 15 yards. On the ground, Land rushed for 150 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown.
On defense, Curtis Anderson and Jaylin Parnell led the way with 10 tackles apiece. Anderson had three tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a pass breakup and two quarterback hurries. L.J. Lovelace also added a tackle for loss.
JJ Lemming paced the Wildcats completing 7-9 for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Quincy Glasper completed 10-15 for 94 yards and a score and receiver Tai-John Mizutani completed the one pass he attempted for 39 yards and a touchdown. Darius Morrison caught four passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Rashaad Boddie, Glasper and Tyler Flanagan all had a rushing score. Boddie led the way in yardage going for 79 yards.
Donte Hamilton led the defense with nine tackles, a tackle for loss and a half-sack. Jahleel Breland added eight tackles.
WOU will return home this week to face Simon Fraser on Saturday, Oct. 30 with kickoff set for 1:05 p.m. at McArthur Field. Simon Fraser lost on the road at Angelo State, 51-10, earlier on Saturday.
