The Astros and Braves will play Game 2 of the World Series with the roof open on Wednesday night. The roof currently is closed as players are going through their pregame workouts, but at 6:15 p.m., it will start to open, which is about a 15-minute process.First pitch is scheduled for 7:09 p.m.
As far as the weather is concerned, the decision makes sense. It's expected to be a clear night and about 70 degrees at first pitch with temperatures remaining in the 60s during the game.
However, in the past, Astros players have said they prefer to play in the controlled elements provided by a closed roof, and the team has enjoyed the loud environment that comes with the roof closed.
Astros manager Dusty Baker said he hasn't heard any of his players talking about the roof being opened or closed.
"I've only been here a couple times, and this is my home, with the roof open," Baker said. "I don't know how it's going to affect the ball, if it carries better or worse. There's always going to be a predominant wind direction, which with the roof open will probably take away some of our home-field advantage because we don't really probably know much more how the ball's going to carry in a predominant wind any more than they do."
The roof was closed for Tuesday's Game 1, but before the game commissioner Rob Manfred said the roof would be open for Game 2 if the weather cooperated.
The roof was closed for Astros home games during both the 2017 and 2019 World Series, but the status of the roof was controversial when the Astros played the White Sox in the 2005 Fall Classic. Then-commissioner Bud Selig ordered the roof to be open during World Series games, despite the Astros' preference to play with a closed roof.
For fans looking for reasons to be optimistic, the Astros have lost five straight World Series games at home with the roof closed. Of course, the Astros also lost both home games of the 2005 World Series when the roof was open.
