World Series Game 3 open thread - Camden Chat

If you’re reading this in Birdland, you’ve probably had a wet Friday. Rain rolled through Georgia as well today, with the tarp only being pulled from the field less than an hour before first pitch. The weather, it seems, will not be sufficient to delay the Astros playing Atlanta in Game 3 of the World Series.

Through two games, the teams have traded relatively one-sided affairs. Atlanta won the first game, 6-2, before losing the second, 7-2. Tough to win when you only score two runs! The other team’s pitching and defense have a say in that, of course.

Looking to secure a 2-1 advantage in the series, Atlanta turns to Ian Anderson, who had a 3.58 ERA in the regular season and has been even better in the postseason, giving up just three runs in 12 innings across three games. Okay, averaging four innings per start isn’t great, but you know.

Houston pitcher Luis Garcia was not any less good in the regular season, posting a 3.30 ERA. His postseason, however, has stunk. Garcia was bombed for ten runs in 9.1 innings across three starts so far. With that in mind, perhaps the Astros will be ready with a quick hook, but if Anderson pitches like he’s done so far in 2021, it may be too late for Houston by the time a struggling Garcia is lifted. Or maybe Garcia will break the trend.

The game will air on Fox.

Houston Astros lineup

  1. Jose Altuve - 2B
  2. Michael Brantley - RF
  3. Alex Bregman - 3B
  4. Yordan Alvarez - LF
  5. Carlos Correa - SS
  6. Kyle Tucker - CF
  7. Yuli Gurriel - 1B
  8. Martin Maldonado - C
  9. Luis Garcia - P

One small side plot of the next three games is they could be the last three games where a pitcher (who’s not Shohei Ohtani or a similar future two-way star) is in the starting batting lineup. There is a big sense that universal DH is coming, perhaps as soon as next year. I won’t miss pitchers batting as part of the normal course of a game. It adds nothing.

Atlanta lineup

  1. Eddie Rosario - LF
  2. Freddie Freeman - 1B
  3. Ozzie Albies - 2B
  4. Austin Riley - 3B
  5. Jorge Soler - RF
  6. Adam Duvall - CF
  7. Travis d’Arnaud - C
  8. Dansby Swanson - SS
  9. Ian Anderson - P

The 30-year-old Rosario posted a 1.647 OPS in six NLCS games, winning the MVP honors for that series. He has reached base safely in just two of nine plate appearances so far in the World Series. Rosario had a .740 OPS over the regular season - just barely below league average at 98 in the park-adjusted OPS+ stat - so he may be due to regress to the mean. Then again, you never know when a Rick Dempsey-level postseason legend is about to be born.
