CINCINNATI, Ohio - The IUPUI men's golf team will close out the fall this week when the Jaguars participate in the Xavier Invitational at Maketewah Country Club on Monday (Oct. 18) and Tuesday (Oct. 19). Team will compete in 54 holes over two days with two rounds on Monday, followed by a final 18 on Tuesday.
The Jaguars have slowly made strides this fall, paced by sophomore Taylor Gardner at the top of the lineup. Gardner owns a team-best 75.20 scoring average over 10 competitive rounds.
Freshman Sam McWilliams is next in line at 75.45 and has two rounds of par or better. McWilliams also leads the team, having defeated 50 percent of his opponents this season. Classmate Morgan Tournemire is third on the team with a 75.55 scoring average and also has two rounds of par or better.
That trio will be joined in the lineup by Matthew Baxter and Preston Nanthavong this week. Baxter has played just one event, but is the program's active career leader with 56 rounds played. Meanwhile, Nanthavong will make his season debut and has 17 career rounds to his credit.
FORMAT: The event will be a 5-count-4 format with teams scheduled for 36 holes on Monday (Oct. 18) and a final round on Tuesday (Oct. 19). Play will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Monday and 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
QUOTABLE: "It feels really good to shoot my first under par round in a college tournament. I'm hopefully going to build on it going forward," freshman Sam McWilliams said following his final round, 1-under 70 at the Tom Tontimonia Invitational two weeks ago.
THE COURSE: Maketewah Country Club is set to par 71 and 6,809 yards this week. It's a Tom Bendelow and Donald Ross design and was formed in 1910. It's considered one of the best courses in the state of Ohio and boasts a historic clubhouse.
THE FIELD: The field includes Austin Peay, Butler, DePaul, Drake, Green Bay, IUPUI, Morehead State, Northern Kentucky, Northern Illinois, Oakland, West Virginia (individuals only) and host Xavier.
RANKINGS: IUPUI is currently ranked No. 271 nationally according to Golfstat and No. 277 according to Golfweek.

No. 1 - Sam McWilliams (75.45 average / 11 rounds)
No. 2 - Matthew Baxter (76.67 average / 3 rounds)
No. 3 - Taylor Gardner (75.20 average / 10 rounds)
No. 4 - Morgan Tournemire (75.55 average / 11 rounds)
No. 5 - Preston Nanthavong (season debut / 78.71 career average)
LAST TIME OUT: IUPUI finished 13th at the Tom Tontimonia Invitational, carding a 36-hole 599 (302-297) at the weather shortened event. McWilliams led the way at 2-over 144 (74-70), finishing tied for 13th of 75 players. Tournemire was next in line at 8-over 150 (74-76).
UP NEXT: IUPUI will turn attention to the spring season, beginning play in February 2022.
