Eastern Illinois (7-14, 0-11 OVC) lost their eleventh straight Ohio Valley Conference match Saturday afternoon as the Eagles of Morehead State (13-9, 9-2 OVC) took care of the Panthers after taking the last three sets, 3-1. These were the scores of each set: 25-23, 13-25, 18-25, 14-25. The Panthers are the only team in the OVC without a win in conference. Morehead State has now won nine OVC games in a row after dropping their first two.
EIU had their best set of the afternoon during the first as they won their only set of the match by a score of 25-23. Both Eastern and Morehead were competitive in the first having the score tied up at 22-22, but Eastern was able to take down the Eagles to win the set. The Panthers were led by Ireland Hieb and TaKenya Stafford in the first with five kills each, and setter Summerlyn Smith had 14 assists. EIU's defense held Morehead State to a .122 hitting percentage in the first. They were led by Irene Wogenstahl with five kills.
Morehead State bounced back in the second set as they took down the Panthers by a set score of 13-25. Eastern's offense lost all traction in the second as they were held to a .103 hitting percentage while they gave up a .621 percentage. Kameryn Sillmon did collect five kills in the set while hitting .500. McKenzee Wagener led all players in the set with six kills for Morehead State while also having Bridget Bessler post 16 assists.
The third saw improvement from the Panthers, but was not enough as Morehead collected their second set with 18-25. Although Eastern's defense held the Eagles to a .088 percentage, MSU's was better by only allowing Eastern to hit on -0.118 of their attacks. Sillmon and Emily Wilcox both collected three kills. Wilcox and Elisavet Papageorgiou also had three block assists each. Olivia Lohmeier had four kills and one block solo during the set for Morehead State.
The fourth set saw an end to the Panther's night as Morehead State held EIU to only 14 points in the fourth. Overall this weekend, Morehead State held Eastern under 15 points during three sets. Kylie Michael and Danielle Allen both collected three kills in the set. Wagener for Morehead State led the way with five kills and Bessler had nine assists.
The Eagles were led by Wagener with 15 kills, Lohemier and Wogenstahl with 11 kills each, Bessler with 45 assists, and Allison Whitten with 16 digs. Morehead State improves their record to 13-9 on the season.
Eastern Illinois was led by Sillmon with 12 kills, Michael and Hieb with six kills each, Smith with 26 assists, Wilcox with five block assists, and Papageorgiou with six block assists. EIU drops to 7-14.
The Panthers have a quick turn around as they travel to SIUE to face-off against the Courgars on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. in Edwardsville.
