LAKE CHARLES – McNeese Basketball will officially begin practicing for the start of the 2021-22 season on Sunday at 4 at the Ralph Ward Recreation Complex.
The new look Cowboys, under the direction of first-year head coach John Aiken, will include 12 newcomers, six of those transfers from Division I schools, and four returners.
"Really excited to kick-off official practices," said Aiken who will be entering his fourth season on the Cowboys' bench. "We have had a great summer and fall, but there's just something different about the calendar turning to October."
The Cowboys will practice the first week and a half in the rec complex before moving out to Burton Coliseum where they'll play their first four home games before returning to The Legacy Center to open up Southland Conference play on January 15 against HBU.
"We have a great group of guys, they work hard, they are committed to this program and university, and are eager to start working towards our scrimmages and games.
"It will be a six-week sprint for us to get ready for the November 9 opener (at SMU)."
Following a visit to SMU, McNeese will trek across the Metroplex to face TCU on Nov. 11. McNeese will open up its home slate on Nov. 15 vs. Champion Christian before visiting LSU on Nov. 18 in an Emerald Coast Classic game.
November 22 will have the Cowboys returning home to play Carver College then will hit the road to Destin, Florida for two games in the Emerald Coast Classic against St. Francis-Brooklyn on Nov. 26 then either North Carolina A&T or Samford on Nov. 27.
Following that, McNeese will play five of its final seven games of the calendar year on the road, beginning with a West and Midwest on Dec. 1 at Seattle and Dec. 4 at Wyoming. A visit to I-10 rival ULL on Dec. 8 will be followed by a Dec. 16 trip to UTEP before returning home against Dallas Christian on Dec. 18. The final two games of December will be Dec. 21 at Kansas State and Dec. 30 at home against Ecclesia College.
New to the schedule this season is a three-game, Southland Pre-Conference Tournament to be held Jan. 6-8 at The Merrell Center in Katy, Texas, the site of the 2022 SLC Tournament. Opponents for those games will be announced later in October.
The Cowboys will begin league play on Jan. 15 against HBU.
"We have very tough non-conference schedule and will have to be prepared mentally and physically for that grind," said Aiken. "We're looking forward to stacking days now that we're officially beginning."
