TULSA, Okla. – It all came down to one pivotal match for nationally ranked Vito Tonejc.
DePaul's ace singles standout had advanced to the Qualifying Round of 32 at the ITA All-American Championships after defeating Guido Marson of Texas A&M by walkover in the morning.
After advancing past opponents from a pair of Power Five Conference schools (Arizona on Monday and Texas A&M), Tonejc's run to the Main Draw was upended Tuesday afternoon in a 6-3, 7-5 setback to Virginia's Chris Rodesch.
It left the talented junior from Zagreb, Croatia just shy of becoming one of the final 16 qualifiers earning berths in Wednesday's Main Draw.
Overall, the Blue Demon contingent of Tonejc, Tripp Tuff, Luuk Wassenaar and Marino Jakic acquitted themselves well at perhaps the toughest tournament of the season that features five of the top 10 players in the ITA preseason national rankings. Tonejc is ranked No. 97.
Coach Matt Brothers and his team will resume their fall season on Friday at the three-day Redbird Invite hosted by Illinois State.
