Women's Tennis Advances in Three Flights at Islander Open - UTRGV Athletics

CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team advanced in three flights at the Islander Open, hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, on Friday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
 
In Flight A of singles, freshman Marjorie Souza defeated Corpus Christi's Camille Townsend in three sets to advance to the semifinals. Souza fell in the first set 3-6 before answering back with a 6-2 win in the second. The tiebreaker was tight but Souza pulled out the 10-8 victory for the win. 
 
Souza will face UTEP's Kathleen Percegona on Saturday for a spot in the Flight A final.
 
Sophomore Valeria Montero picked up a three-set victory over Lamar's Lou Dupuis to advance in Flight B. After falling 3-6 in the first, Montero followed with a 7-5 victory in the second setting up a tiebreaker that Montero won 10-8.
 
Montero will face Corpus Christi's Mariya Shumeika for a spot in the Flight B final. 
 
In doubles, the duo of Souza and sophomore Stefanie Wilske picked up a win in Flight B. Souza and Wilske defeated Lamar's Dupuis and Jayci Wong 8-3 to advance to the finals. 
 
Souza and Wilske will face the winner between Lamar's Noelia Lorca and Elena Rodriguez and Corpus Christi's Leopoldine Boisseau and Kateryna Rublevska. 
 
Play will resume on Saturday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.

Lina Sachica (UTEP) def. Stefanie Wilske (UTRGV) 6-4, 6-1
