JCPenney said Monday it will shutter an additional 13 locations this summer, the company’s second announcement this month of nationwide store closures.
There are 11 JCPenney stores in New Jersey, according to the company’s website, but none are on the list of stores that will permanently close — as of now, at least.
According to CNBC, of the 13 new store closures announced, seven are in Michigan, two in Washington, two in New York and one each in California and Maryland.
The company previously announced plans to permanently close 154 stores after filing for bankruptcy amid the coronavirus pandemic. A “handful” of the previously announced locations expected to close “remain on hold pending further review,” according to a statement.
Liquidation sales for most of the store closures began on June 17, while others will start around July 3, the statement says.
JCPenney is currently offering up to 60% off on furniture and mattresses online, but it appears to be a Fourth of July promotion and not related to any liquidation sales.
Before the pandemic hit, JCPenney planned only six store closures this year. There were 18 stores that shuttered in 2019, including the Hamilton Mall location in Mays Landing.
JCPenney also said it hopes to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
“While closing stores is always an extremely difficult decision, our store optimization strategy is vital to ensuring we emerge from both Chapter 11 and the COVID-19 pandemic as a stronger retailer with greater financial flexibility to allow us to continue serving our loyal customers for decades to come,” CEO Jill Soltau said in a statement.
All JCPenney stores in New Jersey are now open following temporarily closures amid the pandemic.
The brick-and-mortar retail industry already had been suffering, but the coronavirus has wreaked additional havoc on chains.
The Children’s Place, 24 Hour Fitness, Signet Jewelers, Zara,Nordstrom, and Party City are among the other companies that recently have announced store closures.
