samasamp.blogspot.com
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State will open its 2020 volleyball season against Iowa State, hosting the Cyclones Friday and Saturday at Bramlage Coliseum.

Friday night's match, which begins at 6:30 p.m., will mark the Wildcats' Unity Match. Saturday's match is also set for a 6:30 p.m. first serve. In an effort to minimize travel, the Big 12 altered its 2020 schedule to a two-match weekend series on consecutive days in a single location, rather than the traditional home-and-home round robin format.

Both matches will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and the ESPN app with Brain Smoller and former Wildcat Kelsey Stringer on the call. Fans can also listen to Rob Voelker on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM). Free, live audio is available at K-StateSports.com/watch.

General admission tickets will be available beginning Thursday at 8:30 a.m. at K-StateSports.com/tickets or on a walk-up basis on gameday. Due to capacity limitations and to avoid lines at the ticket windows, fans are encouraged to order digital tickets in advance. Fans are reminded that Bramlage Coliseum is limited to 25 percent capacity this season.

Doors will open 60 minutes prior to first serve. Due to construction at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, fans are asked to use the Southeast and Southwest entrances. Click here to see all the 2020 gameday policies.

  • K-State brings back nine letterwinners from 2019, including kills and points leader Brynn Carlson, while adding six newcomers (five freshmen, one transfer).
  • Carlson, a redshirt junior outside hitter, set career highs with 309 kills (2.83 per set) and 328 points (3.01 per set) in 2019.
  • In addition to Carlson, the Wildcats return leaders Megan Vernon (100 blocks), Dru Kuck (326 digs) and Loren Hinkle (25 aces).
  • For the third straight season, the Wildcats boast a nationally ranked recruiting class, as the Cats' 2020 class was tabbed as the 23rd-best by PrepVolleyball.com.
  • This year's freshmen class includes outside hitters Aliyah Carter and Jayden Nembhard, middle blocker Kadye Fernholz, opposite Tessa Mati and defensive specialist/libero Mackenzie Morris.
  • K-State also added senior transfer setter Shelby Martin, who spent three season at East Carolina and was named American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2017.
  • Martin left ECU fourth in program history with 2,623 career assists and became the first Pirate ever to record a triple-double.
  • In 2019, K-State went 9-19 (4-12 Big 12) and finished in a tie for seventh in the Big 12 standings.
 SCOUTING IOWA STATE
  • Iowa State reached the NCAA Tournament a season ago after a 17-12 (8-8 Big 12) record and a top-four finish in the league standings.
  • The Cyclones were ousted in the first round by No. 15 Creighton in straight sets.
  • ISU returns five starters and 13 letterwinners from their postseason squad.
  • Senior middle blocker Candelaria Herrera and junior right-side hitter Eleanor Holthaus were each voted onto the 2020 Preseason All-Big 12 Team.
  • Herrera and Holthaus were both First Team All-Big 12 performers a season ago.
  • Holthaus led ISU with 308 kills and 3.18 kills per set while Herrera posted a team-best .314 hitting efficiency.
  • Setter Piper Mauck (second team), middle blocker Avery Rhodes (second team) and outside hitter Annie Hatch (all-rookie team) are all returning all-conference selections for the Cyclones.
 INSIDE THE SERIES
  • Iowa State leads the all-time series 55-41, dating back to 1976.
  • ISU has won the last seven meetings, and nine of the last 11, in the series.
  • The Cyclones swept the season series in 2019 with a pair of straight-set wins.
  • K-State is 22-21 at home all-time vs. Iowa State after dropping the last three home matches in the series.
  • The Cats are 2-8 in their last 10 overall against Iowa State and 5-5 in their last 10 in Manhattan.
  • K-State last defeated the Cyclones on Sept. 21, 2016, a 3-1 decision at home.

 TALENT PIPELINE
  • K-State was tabbed with the 23rd-best recruiting class in 2020, according to PrepVolleyball.com.
  • It marked the third consecutive season in which the Cats earned a top-30 national ranking.
  • K-State is one of just three teams in the Big 12 to be ranked in the country's top 30 in each of the last three seasons.
  • The 2020 class includes Carter, Fernholz, Mati, Morris and Nembhard.
 NICE DIGS
  • For the first time in program history, K-State had a pair of freshmen reach 300 digs, as Dru Kuck (326) and Loren Hinkle (308) each eclipsed the plateau in 2019.
  • The duo, who both shared time at the libero spot, are just the second and third freshmen in K-State history to turn in over 300 digs in their initial campaign.
  • Both Hinkle and Kuck were named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week last year, becoming the first freshmen to earn defensive player of the week since 2007.
  • Kuck recorded a season-high 36 digs on Oct. 16 at Oklahoma, tying the third-highest total in program history during the rally-scoring era (since 2001) and first 30-dig match since 2015 (Kersten Kober).
  • Kuck turned in five consecutive matches with at least 20 digs to become the first Cat to accomplish the feat in the rally-scoring era.
 NEW HOME SWEET HOME
  • K-State will call Bramlage Coliseum home for the 2020 season, moving from its traditional home of Ahearn Field House due health and safety considerations related to COVID-19.
  • The Wildcats are 17-3 all-time when playing in Bramlage Coliseum.
  • In 2019, K-State went 3-0 in Bramlage after sweeping the K-State Invitational against Clemson, Central Arkansas and Omaha.

  • The Cats picked up two wins last year when trailing by two sets: Sept. 5 vs. Clemson and Oct. 23 vs. KU).
  • The two comeback wins equaled the program's single-season record, as they did so in 2003, 2008 and 2014.
