The Big 12 is moving closer towards finalizing its expansion plan to invite BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston to the conference, multiple sources told The Athletic.
The four schools are planning to individually submit formal applications to the Big 12 early next week for entry into the conference, sources said. Once the Big 12 receives the applications, the conference’s board of directors is expected to meet and extend formal invitations to each of the schools. All four schools are expected to accept those invitations, sources said.
According to the Big 12 bylaws, a supermajority vote of 80 percent of the league’s board of directors is required to admit new members. Sources told The Athletic that the targeted schools have the necessary votes for admission and the process is considered a formality.
“We wouldn’t have gotten this far if they didn’t (have the votes),” one source said.
Multiple sources told The Athletic that the conference is working to get this done in September and that new schools could be invited as early as Sept. 10. But one Big 12 source cautioned this process is still “highly fluid” and that extending invitations by next Friday would be an aggressive timeline, though not an impossible one.
These developments have moved at a rapid pace. Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby met with the ADs of the eight remaining schools on Tuesday and Wednesday in Dallas to discuss their expansion options.
The Athletic first reported on Thursday that BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston had emerged as the leading contenders to join the conference. Sports Illustrated was first to report that the four schools are expected to apply for membership next week.
