A video of a New Jersey woman telling a bear to close her door—and the bear following her instructions—has been shared on YouTube.
The woman, bear activist Susan Kehoe, uploaded the video to her 1,500 subscribers on Tuesday. "Bears are damn smart! This bear learned how to close the front door to my house," she wrote in the caption.
In the video, Kehoe can be heard saying "is it raining outside?" before she opens her door to look around. As she pans the camera down, a bear appears in the shot on the steps to her door.
"Oooh, who do we have here?" she says. "Mr. Bear, will you please close my door?" She repeats the command several times as the bear comes closer to the doorway. "Close the door Mr. Bear," Kehoe says.
The bear then gently takes hold of the door handle and pulls it towards itself, almost closing the door completely.
"You have to finish closing it, sweetie, the cold air is coming in," she says. "Close the door, sweetie, Thank you."
Kehoe, from Vernon, is known for her interactions with bears. In 2010, she was sentenced to a year's probation and was fined $1,250 after interfering with state biologists who were attempting to tranquilize a bear so they could change its radio collar, nj.com reports.
Two years later, nj.com also reported she was found not guilty of intentionally feeding black bears.
In 2017, she also faced harassment charges after allegedly posting on Facebook that two men had killed a bear. Kehoe then made plans to sue the municipal prosecutor and court administrator for malicious prosecution, the New Jersey Herald reported.
Kehoe was cleared of the harassment charges by a judge, who cited free speech, according to The Associated Press.
Black bears are the biggest land mammal in New Jersey and they are found across all of the state's counties.
Bears are attracted to food sources from people, and the Division of Fish & Wildlife has asked people to take precautions to stop bears being attracted to residential areas. It said this teaches bears to associate people with food sources.
"Bears are attracted to neighborhoods by garbage odors, so properly securing your garbage is one of the best ways to prevent bears from becoming a nuisance in your community," said the Division of Fish & Wildlife. "Residents are encouraged to work within their community to make sure all garbage is secured and kept away from bears."
It is illegal to feed bears in New Jersey. Anyone caught feeding them can face a fine of up to $1,000.
