EUGENE, Ore – The Portland State men's tennis team earned four singles victories this weekend as it capped off the fall season at the Duck Invitational.
Singles play was the highlight for the Vikings, as they earned a trio of wins in the opening round. PSU's Will Jesser, Tommy Hsu and Oliver Fernandez all advanced to the Round of 16 in the yellow bracket. Sam De Vries also made an appearance in the second round after beginning the weekend with a bye.
Jesser earned a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win over Oregon's Nima Movassaghi while Hsu topped Nicolas Prieto of New Mexico 7-6(4), 6-3. Also notching a victory on Friday was Fernandez who defeated Nevada's Ambroise Marchand 6-2, 6-4. Competing in the green singles bracket was Viking senior Nils Plutat who dropped his opening match to Oregon's Jesper Klov-Nilsson 7-6(1), 6-4.
The Vikings came up empty-handed in the round of 16 despite a pair of three-set battles from Hsu (6-4, 3-6, 6-0) and De Vries (7-5, 2-6, 6-3). After dropping a match in the round of 16, Jesser picked up his second win of the weekend when he defeated Nevada's Daniel Dudockin 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the green consolation bracket. He later fell in the semifinals to Eleftherios Neos of the University of Portland (6-2, 6-3).
Jesser and De Vries gave the Vikings their best showing in doubles action, battling Portland's Eleftherios Neos and Issa Yoshida to a tiebreak but eventually falling 8-7(5). Hsu and Fernandez also lost in the main doubles draw, losing 8-3 to Washington's Nedim Suko and Rikuto Yamaguchi.
Portland State will look ahead to winter and spring competition as they're set to open the 2022 season at the University of Oregon on Jan 8.
