2021 Houston Open picks, odds, field: Proven PGA insider says back Sam Burns, fade Tony Finau at Memorial Park - CBS Sports

samasamp.blogspot.com

Carlos Ortiz has his sights on a repeat when the PGA Tour returns to Memorial Park for the 2021 Houston Open, which tees off Thursday. Ortiz got his first, and so far only, PGA Tour victory last year when the tournament returned to the course for the first time in almost 60 years. The 30-year-old was the runner-up last week in Mexico and looks to become the first golfer to defend in Houston since Vijay Singh in 2004-05. He will have to contend with a strong field that includes FedEx Cup leader Sam Burns and fellow young stars Sungjae Im and Matthew Wolff. Four-time major champion Brooks Koepka is also scheduled to tee off Thursday, and he was a consultant on the renovation of the course in 2019.

Caesars Sportsbook lists Burns as the 16-1 favorite in its latest 2021 Houston Open golf odds, followed closely by Scottie Scheffler at 18-1. Among the other players expected to contend from the 2021 Houston Open field are Im (22-1), Wolff (25-1) and Tony Finau (25-1), while Koepka is listed at 30-1 and Ortiz at 33-1. Before you make any 2021 Houston Open bets or any PGA Tour predictions, you need to see what proven golf insider Sal Johnson has to say.

The esteemed golf insider has been around the game for many years and knows what it takes to win. Last week before the event in Mexico, Johnson had Viktor Hovland among his players to watch, while he predicted Koepka would miss the cut.

"We still don't know if he is healthy and ready to go," Johnson told SportsLine of Koepka. "He tried to play last year and missed the cut. I have a funny feeling that we will see the same this week."

The 31-year-old didn't break par and went home early again, while Hovland shot 23 under to cruise to a four-stroke victory.

Johnson has been on a strong run already this season. Before the Zozo Championship in Japan, Johnson tabbed Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets, and he was right on the money. Matsuyama shot a final-round 65 and won by five strokes after trailing by one with eight holes to play on Sunday.

At the Sanderson Farms Championship, Johnson nailed Burns as his winner. Anyone who has followed Johnson's advice has cashed in huge.

Now Johnson, the first producer of "Inside the PGA Tour," a longtime ABC Sports golf producer who worked with Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, and founder of the world's top golf stats database, has released his highly confident 2021 Houston Open golf picks, and they will surprise you. You can only see Johnson's expert PGA Tour picks at SportsLine.

Top 2021 Houston Open golf predictions

In a major surprise, the golf expert is slightly fading Tony Finau. The 32-year-old is among the favorites, but he is not off to a great start to this season. He has T-45 finishes in his two events, and it looks like he could need time to regain his groove. Finau closed last season with a Northern Trust victory, a T-15 at the BMW and T-11 in the Tour Championship, so he can definitely go low. But he is 123rd in driving accuracy and 93rd in greens in regulation. He was T-24 last year at Memorial Park, so there isn't any obvious reason for optimism this week.

On the other hand, Johnson is looking to see if Burns will continue his torrid pace to start his 2021-22 season. The 25-year-old won the Sanderson Farms and was T-5 at the CJ Cup, and a final-round 72 cost him another stellar finish at the Shriners, where he wound up T-14. He is 58-under par over his three events so far and had eight top-10 finishes last season, including his Valspar win. He has been locked in on the greens, hitting almost 79 percent in regulation (third on tour), and is hitting fairways (68.45 percent, 20th). He finished T-7 in Houston last year.

The stats guru also knows Wolff is destined for success, and it could come sooner than later. The 22-year-old comes off a tie for fifth in Mexico last week, and he led the tournament after two rounds. He has finished no lower than T-17 in three events this season. He is 52-under par over the three events, shooting in the 60's in 10 of the 12 rounds. He shot a third-round 74 at El Camaleon last week but bounced back with a 65 on Sunday. He is second in scoring average (69.079), 11th in greens in regulation (76.39 percent) and 18th in strokes gained putting.

How to make 2021 Houston Open golf picks

For this week's event in Houston, the golf expert is backing a stunning long shot who comes in at well over 60-1. This veteran had a strong finish at last year's Houston Open and had some surprising moments at the tail end of last season. He also went really low in the final round of his most recent event. He could pull off a stunning result this week, and anyone who backs this underdog could cash in huge.
