CHICAGO – DePaul and new head coach Tony Stubblefield open the 2021-22 season with a Wednesday night game against Coppin State. The Blue Demons and Eagles meet at Wintrust Arena as DePaul begins a season-opening eight-game homestand.
 
Wednesday's game can be seen on FS1 starting at 8 p.m. with Adam Alexander (play-by-play) and Nick Bahe (analyst) handling the broadcast duties. The game can also be seen online at foxsports.com/live. DePaul's radio tandem of Zach Zaidman (play-by-play) and Dave Corzine (analyst) can be heard on WYLL (1160 AM) and online on DePaul All-Access at depaulbluedemons.com/live. Coppin State opens its season on Tuesday in Rogers Park at Loyola. The Eagles posted a 9-13 overall record and 8-4 mark in the MEAC last season.
 
Stubblefield Makes DePaul Debut: Head coach Tony Stubblefield is the 15th head coach in program history. He was named head coach of the men's basketball program in April 2021. He spent the last 11 seasons at Oregon and helped the Ducks to 10 postseason appearances that included eight NCAA Tournament berths. The eight NCAA berths saw Oregon reach the Final Four once and Elite Eight once along with three other Sweet 16 appearances.
 
Prior to Oregon, Stubblefield spent four years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in the BIG EAST Conference at the University of Cincinnati. He also was on the staffs at New Mexico State (2000-06), UT-Arlington (1996-00), UT-San Antonio (1995-96) and at his alma mater Nebraska-Omaha (1992-95).
 
Season-Opening Notes: DePaul is 85-13 all-time in the first game of the season... Wednesday's game is the start of the 99th recognized season of DePaul basketball (since 1923-24)... DePaul competed in basketball prior to the 1923-24 season, but season records and results are incomplete... DePaul has won 13 of its last 14 season openers.
 
Home Openers: The Blue Demons are 90-8 all-time in the first home game of the season... the Blue Demons have won 14 of the last 15 home openers and posted victories in 53 of the last 56 first games on their home floor... at Wintrust Arena, DePaul is 3-1 in the first game of the season.
 
It Could Happen: A win marks DePaul's fourth straight at Wintrust Arena to start the season... a win would also be the fourth straight in season openers and 14th in the last 15 first games... Javon Freeman-Liberty needs seven points for 1,200 in his collegiate career... Nick Ongenda needs two blocked shots for 50 in his career... he has 48 rejections in 44 career games.
 
What's Back: Entering the 2021-22 season, DePaul returns six players including one starter from a year ago. Headlining the returners are Javon Freeman-Liberty and Nick Ongenda. Freeman-Liberty is the lone returning starter after starting 14 games a season ago and averaging 14.4 points per game. Ongenda played in 17 games with four starts with averages of 5.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. Other returners include Brendan Favre, David Jones, Courvoisier McCauley and Max Williams.
 
What's New: Stubblefield welcomes seven newcomers that includes six transfers and one true freshman. The group of transfers includes two graduate transfers, three undergraduate transfers and one junior college transfer.
 
Brandon Johnson (Minnesota) and Shaheed Medlock (Georgia Tech) are enrolled at DePaul as graduate students. Yor Anei (SMU), Tyon Grant-Foster (Kansas) and Jalen Terry (Oregon) are immediately eligible this season under NCAA guidelines while Philmon Gebrewhit (South Plains CC) played his first two seasons at the junior college level. Ahamad Bynum played at Chicago's Simeon High School before enrolling at DePaul.
 
Noting the Blue Demons: The men's basketball program is 1,488-1,054 (.585) all-time... the Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 855 straight games... DePaul's last game without a three was over 25 years ago on Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB at Allstate Arena... the current streak started against Notre Dame on Feb. 21, 1993... over the last 10 seasons (since start of 2010-11 season), DePaul is 21-6 against Chicagoland opponents (Chicago State, UIC, Loyola-Chicago, Northern Illinois, Northwestern)... in the last 20 seasons (since the start of 2000-01 season), the record against locals is 35-12... the Blue Demons defeated UIC and Northwestern during the 2019-20 season.
 
The Opponent – Coppin State Eagles: Coppin State posted a 9-13 overall record and 8-4 mark in the MEAC last season... the Eagles open the season on Tuesday night at Loyola Chicago... Coppin State was picked to finish fourth in the MEAC preseason poll... Nenda Tarke and Kyle Cardaci are the top returners... Tarke was the 2021 MEAC Rookie of the Year and third team All-MEAC seletion... Cardaci was the MEAC's top three-point shooter...  head coach Juan Dixon is in his fifth season leading the Eagles.
 
The Series: Wednesday is the first meeting between the programs.
 
Against the MEAC: DePaul is 4-1 all-time against the current lineup of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference programs... the Blue Demons are 1-0 against Delaware State, Howard and Norfold State... DePaul and Morgan State have split a pair of meetings... the Blue Demons defeated Morgan State, 91-63, in the last meeing against a MEAC opponent on Nov. 12, 2018 at Wintrust Arena.
 
Non-Conference Notebook: Over the last three seasons, the Blue Demons are 26-6 against non-BIG EAST opponents... a year ago, saw DePaul go 2-0 in non-conference regular-season games with wins over Western Illinois and Valparaiso... two seasons ago, DePaul's 12-1 non-conference record was the best regular-season mark since DePaul joined the Great Midwest Conference... prior to the 1991-92 season, the Blue Demons were an independent before competing in the Great Midwest (1991-95), Conference USA (1995-05) and now the BIG EAST since the 2005-06 season... DePaul's 9-0 record to begin the 2019-20 season was one of eight streaks of at least nine consecutive wins to open a season... it was the longest streak since the 1986-87 squad started with a 16-0 record... the 1979-80 team won its first 25 games for the longest season-opening streak in program history.
