CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Duke placed three boats in the top six of the Varsity 8+ race as the Blue Devils wrapped up fall competition at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Va., on Sunday.

The Blue Devils' A boat registered a time of 13:37.5 on the four-kilometer course to finish second, while Duke's B boat crossed in third at 13:49.4. The C boat clocked a mark of 14:00.5, just 0.4 seconds faster than Virginia's B boat, to secure sixth.

"I thought Duke did a really good job today," said head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno. "We trailered up this morning, rigged our boats, got on the water, raced well and trailered home all in one day. I think that our team showed some good speed at the top end and some good depth all around. The coaching staff is pleased. I think we have work to do to get where we want to be this spring, but I think all signs indicate that the work that we're doing right now in practice is being effective."

The Varsity 8+ A lineup was nearly identical to the lineup that posted the top time at the Head of the Hooch regatta last week, with the only addition being senior Grace Butero. Duke's B crew consisted of a veteran lineup featuring two grad students and four seniors, including coxswain Sarah Royka and stroke Amelia Shunk.

Conversely, Duke's C boat included four freshmen – Anya Hasija (cox), Lauren Brandmeyer (stroke), Lily Abbott and Hannah Steven. The young crew posted a faster time than the Navy, Clemson and Louisville A boats while also outracing the Virginia and SMU B crews.

In the Varsity 4+ that followed, Duke's A and B squads finished third and fourth, respectively. The A boat came in at 15:21.4, trailing second-place Virginia B by two seconds, while the Blue Devils' B crew clocked 15:23.8. Duke's C boat also placed in the top 10, finishing 10th with a time of 15:46.3.

The Novice 8+ event closed out Sunday's slate of racing, with the Duke A crew finishing second overall with a time of 14:36.8. Brandmeyer, Abbott and Steven were once again in action as members of the A lineup, and were joined by classmates Audrey Kline (cox), Mollie Nicol, Natalie Ashton, Noelle Fuchs and Jane Atkeson, along with sophomore Rosa Golchin.

The Blue Devils now take a three-month hiatus from competitive racing and will gear up for a spring season that features a potential of eight events, including the 2022 NCAA Championships in late May. Duke is next in action on Feb. 26 in a scrimmage against Virginia at Lake Michie in Bahama, N.C.
