COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State is set to open its 123rd season of basketball this week with three games in a seven-day span. The first of which will be against in-state foe Akron on Tuesday night, Nov. 9. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. and ESPN 2 will have the television coverage.
Tuesday will be Free Student Ticket night. All Ohio State students will receive a free ticket with their student ID. Single game and season tickets are sale at the Ohio State Office online.
- Ohio State is set to open its 123rd season of basketball this week with three games in a seven-day span.
- The first of which will be against in-state foe Akron on Tuesday night, Nov. 9.
- The Buckeyes lead the all-time series with Akron 7-1 and this will be the first regular season meeting since Dec. 5, 1985.
- The Buckeyes are coming off back-to-back 21-10 seasons. They finished runner-up in the Big Ten Tournament a season ago after a remarkable four-game run and earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
- Ohio State is one of three Power 5 teams to have won 20 or more games in each of the last three seasons.
- The Buckeyes will be led this year by four team captains in senior Justin Ahrens, junior E.J. Liddell, senior Justice Sueing and graduate Kyle Young.
- J. Liddell was one of five unanimous selections on the preseason All-Big Ten Team. He was also named to the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Preseason Watch List as well as the NABC Player of the Year Preseason Watch List. Liddell is coming off a season that saw him earn first team All-Big Ten honors as he was second on the team in scoring at 16.2 ppg and led the team with 6.7 rebounds per game.
- Justice Sueing was one of 20 players named to the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Watch List. He started all 31 games last year in his first season on the court for the Buckeyes and averaged 10.7 ppg.
- The Buckeyes welcome three graduate transfers this summer in Joey Brunk from Indiana, Cedric Russell from Louisiana and Jamari Wheeler from Penn State.
- With those additions, the Buckeyes will have six student-athletes on the roster who have already earned their undergraduate degrees. That is tied for the most in the country.
- Ohio State features a veteran team with a load of collegiate experience. The 15 players on the roster combined to play in 1,001 collegiate games entering the season. That is the most combined games of any team in the country.
- Head coach Chris Holtmann is in his fifth season with the program. He has an 87-44 record at Ohio State and an overall coaching record of 201-129. His teams have won 20 or more games in each of the last eight seasons.
