EAST LANSING, Mich. – Northern Illinois University's Brit Wilson continues to add to his résumé as the Huskie senior took the title at 184 as the NIU wrestling team turned in a solid performance at the MSU Open at Michigan State's Jenison Field House on Saturday.
"It was great to get back to action this fall," NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig said. "We wrestled hard and learned a lot about what we will work on moving forward."
Wilson began his day on a fast start. The Huskie All-American earned first period pins of Dylan Miracle of Cal Poly and Findlay's Mark Trifelos in his first two bouts. He advanced to the championship match with an 8-1 decision over Oklahoma's Darion Roberts.
However, Bernie Truax of Cal Poly suffered an injury in his semifinal match and was unable to compete, giving Wilson the championship.
In addition to Wilson's championship at 184, two other Huskies competed for titles at their respective weight classes.
Izzak Olejnik, a 2021 NCAA qualifier, picked up where he left off last season. The Huskie junior won his first three matches of the season at 165, including a pair of wins over Central Michigan foes. Olejnik began his day with a 16-1 tech fall of Alex Jacobs in his first match of the day. He then moved on to a 6-0 victory over CMU's Tracy Hubbard.
Olejnik advanced to the championship match after posting a 3-2 win over Northwestern's David Ferrante. However, Evan Wick of Cal Poly proved to be a tough opponent to score on, defeating Olejnik, 11-0 in a major decision win.
Freshman Tulga Zuunbayan, competing at 157, enjoyed similar success as Olejnik. After a bye, Zuunbayan defeated Derek Gilcher of Indiana, 9-3. He then edged out Central Michigan's Johnny Lovett, 4-3 to advance to the semifinals.
It took an extra frame, but Zuunbayan prevailed over Trevor Chumbley of Northwestern 10-8. After wrestling to an 8-8 tie after three periods with a takedown in the first overtime, setting up a meeting with Michigan State's Chase Saldate.
Saldate, who scored victories via pin in three of his first four bouts, added a fourth fall victory, defeating Zuunbayan within 37 seconds to hand Zuunbayan his first loss of the season.
Other notable Huskie matches on the day included a victory by fall of Findlay's Zach Collins by Bryce West at 125 and a 3-1 win over Dane Durlacher of Illinois. However, he suffered a 4-3 decision to his brother, Drew, in the semifinals of the consolation bracket.
The Huskies return to action Saturday, Nov. 13 when they open conference competition at Rider. The match begins at 6 p.m. CT.
